Another quarter has come and gone! Not too long ago we gave an overview of Fleep features released in 2017 — now, it is time for the Fleep quarterly review of what got done in Q1 of 2018 and what we have planned next.
So, here is the review of Q1 of 2018:
- Task completion notifications — these push a notification to the conversation whenever someone marks a task as done. Think of it as a subtle, but effective form of instant gratification, a virtual high-five. If these get too much though, you can always turn them off from the Conversation settings.
- More Tasks improvements — as Tasks are a core part of Fleep, we keep investing into incremental improvements to make sure the functionality comes full circle for our users. These improvements included a “Move to section” action, a rewrite of Tasks on mobile apps and a great secret feature involving the ((todo)) and ((done)) emoticons.
- Wide right pane — you can now expand Taskboards and Pinboards to an even wider state, giving you a really zen experience for working with tasks and pinned messages.
- Fleep emoji reactions — we think you’ll love our recently released emoji reactions not just for all its fun effects, but also for how it can improve productivity. You can use reactions to respond to something, without sending an actual message that would alert everyone in the conversation.
- Push notifications for every new message — there are people who love our intelligent logic for sending push notifications, optimized for less noise and more focus — and there are people who’d rather receive a push notification for every new incoming message. Now, if you belong to the later group, go ahead and try out this new account Preference!
- Sleep mode — this is an account preference we almost didn’t want to let users decide about. Its default setting makes sure that if you leave a Fleep conversation open on your screen, then new incoming messages will not be marked as read automatically. Instead, they will be shown with the “New messages” indicator. We’re trying to make sure you won’t miss any messages that may be important to you. However, if this in any way hinders how you use Fleep, you can set the timer for longer than the default 1min or disable it altogether.
- appear.in default room — if you’re a regular user of our audio and video calling with appear.in, then this one’s for you! Open any Fleep conversation’s settings and configure a default appear.in room — and all calls started in that conversation will launch the respective appear.in room.
And what do we have planned next? Here’s what we have planned to build in the next 3 months (March, April, June), the Q2 of 2018:
- My tasks — as always, unfinished business is our first priority. We’re starting beta testing real soon!
- Mobile support for emoji reactions — this is a no-brainer. We wanted to launch emoji reactions to you as soon as possible, but we weren’t going to leave these without mobile support. Soon enough, you’ll be able to see, add and remove reactions on the mobile apps as well!
- Private tasks — in beefing up our Tasks functionality, Private tasks are up next after My tasks. These will be the kind of tasks that only you can see, in your My tasks view.
- User status and do not disturb mode — this has been requested from us for a while, and we believe it will be a feature that, like reactions, adds a good mix of useful & fun to Fleep.
- Global user search — as Fleep is a network, we’re planning to make it easier for users to find other Fleep users. Currently, you can ‘find’ people when adding them to conversations with their Fleep username or primary email address. Global user search will add the option of finding people by their name!
- Improvements to email conversations — we will be working to improve the experience of email messages in Fleep. These will be a treat to everyone who uses Fleep to send and receive emails!

It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time to review how we did in 2017. Nope, we’re not going to tell you about how many cups of coffee we consumed or how many slices of cake we had per team member… Let’s just say our CEO loves cake, and our CTO probably has coffee running in his veins instead of blood.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at what Fleep features were released in the last 12 months.
- Tasks 2.0 and Event Stream API – this entailed a thorough rewrite of our message flow and Taskboards, behind-the-scenes enhancements to Fleep Tasks. This also included some preparation work for the long-awaited My Tasks feature (more about that later…).
- Fleep for Business – in 2017, we had a dedicated team working on everything Fleep for Business-related. We launched Fleep for Business in September, and then added some more functionalities in the months that followed.
- Trello integration – this long-awaited integration can be used to send updates from Trello cards and lists to a Fleep conversation. Read more: Introducing the Trello integration in Fleep!
- appear.in integration – we built an integration with appear.in so you could create and join audio-video calls directly from Fleep. Read more: Voice and video calling in Fleep now with appear.in.
- appear.in integration 2.0 – then, we upgraded our appear.in integration so you can start a call with any specific appear.in room by using the command /call roomname.
- Team labels 2.0 – we made some changes to how team labels work and how you can use them to organize your conversations. Since the launch of Fleep Teams, every team created is accompanied by a team label that is automatically added to all team conversations. Now, you can also add the label to any other conversation as well. Your conversations, your rules.
- Left pane rewrite – we rewrote the left pane (conversation list on the desktop version), improving the desktop conversation list and moving all search in Fleep to the left pane. As a part of these changes, we also said our farewell to the All Conversations view in the web app.
- “New messages” animation – we introduced this animation to indicate when new messages have been marked as read.
- Linux app – yes, Fleep for Linux was signed, sealed, delivered in 2017.
- Mobile label management – labels help you organize your conversations in Fleep. This year, we made it possible to add and remove labels on the Android and iOS apps!
- Server infrastructure reorganization – we split our servers onto more separate VMs, to better serve increasing server load.
- Android push notifications 2.0 – as Android recently made some changes to how push notifications work, we had to make some changes to make sure our push notifications work seamlessly.
- Storage limit – we have started calculating how much storage you have used, based on how many files you have access to – including both files you’ve uploaded and what have been shared with you.
- Mute until read – now you have the option to mute conversations until you read them. Once you have read all messages, the conversation will be unmuted.
- Other – we re-hauled our sign-up flow, which now works with code based verification, and also started work on message reactions.
We have made our plans for the next quarter, and set our focus on Tasks. We will work on task notifications that will alert the conversation when a task is completed and My Tasks, a view where you can see all tasks assigned to you, in one place (let us know through Support if you’d like to be a beta user for this!). After that, we will start working on due dates for our tasks. Additionally, we will work on some improvements to Fleep Teams, email conversations and managed conversations.

September is here! We’ve been busy working towards our mission of radically improving how people manage their work conversations, tasks and email.
Most recently, we sat down to plan our product developments for the next 3 months, and we’d love to share them with you. But first, a quarterly review of what we got done in the last couple months:
- Android push notifications 2.0 – as Android recently made some changes to how push notifications work, we had to make some changes to make sure our push notifications work in a reliable way.
- Storage limit – we have started calculating how much storage the files you’ve uploaded use up (but we do not enforce any limit just yet).
That’s it?! Well, yes. It was a short 2-month “quarter” (as we switched our quarterly plannings around a bit) and most of our engineering time actually went into making underlying architectural changes in preparation for Tasks feature improvements and My Tasks. Also, one of the 2 months included vacations for all of our team members.
But what do we have planned next? Here are our plans for the next 3 months (Sept, Oct, Nov), that is Q4 of 2017:
- Tasks API 2.0 & Event Stream API – we’re almost done with the behind-the-scenes improvements to Fleep Tasks, along with some architectural updates to the message flow. We will start testing these in the coming weeks, but even when we release this to live – if all goes well, you will not notice any significant changes. As our CTO said, it’s never a good time to rewrite major parts of your architectural code… But it is necessary once in a while.
- My Tasks – as soon as we’re done with the new Tasks API, we’ll start working on a view where you’ll be able to see all tasks assigned to you.
- Other Tasks improvements – Private tasks, Column view, Tasks notifications… You have no idea how great our Tasks will be.
- Reactions – YES! While reactions were neglected for a while, they’re back in the plans now.
- Fleep for Business – while the public launch of Business is literally around the corner, we’re going to continue adding some functionality to the subscription. These improvements will make admin controlled conversations and teams even more powerful.
- Storage limit 2.o – we are taking the next step in storage usage calculation, and now working to calculate used storage based on files accessible to the user.
- Stats server setup – we’re building our own statistics system, to get better and more reliable insights into how our people use Fleep. This will make it even easier to make Fleep better for you!

The first half of 2017 is over. (Yes, really!) That means it’s time to review what we built for you in Fleep this last quarter and reveal our plans for the next quarter.
First, a look at the second quarter of 2017:
- Left pane improvements and All Conversations sunset – we improved the desktop conversation list in quite a few ways and migrated search in Fleep to the left pane. As a part of these changes, we also said our farewell to the All Conversations view in the web app.
- “New messages” animation – we introduced an animation to indicate when new messages have been marked as read.
- Linux app – yes, Fleep for Linux has been signed, sealed, delivered.
- Tasks 2.0 – we have started behind-the-scenes enhancements to Fleep Tasks, to make the conversation Taskboards snappier. This also includes some preparation work for the long-awaited My Taskboard feature.
- Mobile label management – labels help you organize your conversations in Fleep. Now, you can also add and remove labels in our Android and iOS apps!
- appear.in integration 2.0 – we’ve upgraded our appear.in integration! Now, you can start a call with any specific appear.in room by using the command /call roomname.
- Fleep for Business – we finished the main building blocks, leaving us to polish a few last things before we launch the Business subscription. Stay tuned!
- Server infrastructure reorganization – we split our servers onto more separate VMs, to better serve increasing server load.
What’s coming up next? Here are our plans for Q3 of 2017*:
- Tasks 2.0 – first of all, we’ll finish the behind-the-scenes improvements to Fleep Tasks. For time being, you will not notice any significant changes, besides enhanced performance.
- My Taskboard – as soon as we’re done improving the conversation Taskboard, we’ll start working on a view where you’ll be able to see all tasks assigned to you.
- Storage limit – we’re working to start tracking users’ uploaded storage and enforce a limit of 5GB per user.
- Mobile push notifications 2.0 – as both Android and iOS have made significant changes to how push notifications work, we need to rewrite some of our own code. Realistically, the updates will not be released until later this year.
- Fleep for Business – we’ll polish Fleep for Business, to make it ready for its public launch.
* We’re changing our quarterly planning tradition a little bit, and switching from calendar year quarters (often also used in economics) to seasonal quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring & Summer quarter). So, this year’s Q3 is only 2 months long (July-August) and includes a lot of Summer vacations for our team – hence the shorter-than-usual plan for Q3 (from here on out, “Summer quarter”).
